Dear Donald Tusk (European Council President) / Federica Mogherini (High Representative / Vice-President) / Jean-Claude Juncker (European Commission President) / Antonio Tajani (European Parliament President) /
We write with regard to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order banning the citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for 120 days, suspending the U.S. refugee resettlement program for 120 days and halting the resettlement for Syrian refugees, which we consider highly discriminatory, dangerous and illegal. Moreover, the specifics of the ban are a threat to European citizens who share dual nationality with any of the seven countries it targets.
Although appreciative of statements this week by European Council President Donald Tusk and Vice President Federica Mogherini reaffirming the values of the EU and its respect for individuals regardless of religion, ethnicity, nationality or gender, we believe that a greater response remains of urgent necessity. We are thus asking for a clear and coordinated denouncement from the European Council, Commission and Parliament on President Trump’s harmful ban.
Specifically, such a denouncement should demand that refugees and migrants be treated in accordance with the international refugee and human rights law, in particular that due process and effective remedy must be ensured, so that no person is returned to a country where they would risk serious harm, in line with the non-refoulement principle. It should address immediate measures for mitigating the impact currently borne by those EU citizens affected by the ban. At such times, the EU must not follow the same course in its migration policy but show leadership in holding firm to human rights, non-discrimination, and rule of law.
