All quiet on the Eastern front: Twitter trends for Barroso’s #SOTEU Address
The website trendsmap.com, which monitors hashtag activity on Twitter in the world’s capitals, revealed today (12 September) that Brussels was the city most interested in European Commission President Barroso’s State of the European Union (SOTEU) address, with London and Paris in second and third… Don’t all shout “Well, duh” at once…
Perhaps more intriguing was that apparently all was quiet on the… Eastern front. Apart from Belgrade and Riga, no other capital cities in Eastern Europe saw much Twitter activity related to the address.
What does this tell us? Are parts of Eastern Europe not quite up to speed with the social media revolution? The evidence suggests Eastern Europeans are serial Facebook users, compared to the West’s Twitter obsessives (Czech President Vaclav Klaus has only about 6,000 Twitter followers; David Cameron 27,400). Or could it signal a certain apathy towards events happening in a far off capital that they know little about and that they feel has little impact on their lives?…
