Europe Needs To Be The Leader In Suppressing Piracy

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 12/05/10

With assistance from American friends, Blogactiv has been able to put questions to Bob Haywood, Executive Director of One Earth Future Foundation about the forthcoming UN Contact Meeting about maritime piracy. Mr Haywood explains the issues surrounding piracy and the EU in some detail.

One Earth Future is a not-for-profit, non-governmental ‘Think and Do Tank’ founded in 2007 to confront seemingly intractable threats to global peace and security by developing new and effective systems of governance. The Think Tank side supports the work of the Do Tank by incorporating cutting edge theories, research, analysis and prior experience into the design of the governance structures it develops to address specific threats. One Earth Future’s commitment to implementation ensures that these structures successfully address the current threats and eventually result in an Earth beyond war —hence our tagline, Peace Through Governance.

This is one of the most creative and refreshing peace-based ideas that have surfaced in the last two years regarding the problem of maritime piracy. Kudos to the folks at One Earth Future – who, by the way, are based in the land-locked state of Colorado in the heart of the American Rocky Mountains! And they are taking on global maritime pirates!

I am fascinated by the scope of this proposal – especially in light of the persistent attempts of military folks in the U.S. and the U.K. to pursue a military option ON LAND in pirate ports in Somalia… a recipe for disaster that the West cannot and should not afford again. Great and unique thinking One Earth Future!

Why don’t we leave combatting piracy to the great naval nations Panama, Bahamas and Nigeria?

If we spent out tax money to combat piracy then we also should require domestic flagging for the vessels we protect. Otherwise leave it to all these nations under which flag you operate to save your ass.

And in terms of Somali laws it is very simple, just sink their boats. Hire Somalis to sink Somali ships. Without ships there can’t be piracy.
